Q & A of the Day – Should I use a torpedo joint a tray network?
Question: We are jointing two lengths of 185mm cable together on a tray network. Is there any reason (apart from it being unsightly) why a torpedo/submarine joint with epoxy resin can't be used (class of insulation etc)?

Answer: Firstly, the choice of jointing method should be discussed with client.

A number of different types of joint might be usable, depending upon the circumstances. This is usually the decision of the installer. Possible reasons why the torpdo joint might be less desirable include:

1. For low smoke halogen-free sheathed cables, an appropriate jointing kit should be used to maintain performance.

2. You only get one go at doing the epoxy joint. A taped/sleeved joint would be more forgiving.

3. The voltage, temperature and other electrical performance factors involved may dictate against it.
