Paul Derren asks about RCD protection needed for a recycling pump and pressure pump. His question has been answered by the NICEIC (Theme – Installation Tips):

Question: I'm installing two pumps - one for the recycling of hot water; the second being a pressure pump. Both are located on the high terrace of an apartment building and they are both fed with 1.5mm wires, separated circuits, their labels showing IP44 ingress protection.
My question is about providing or not RCD protection for the pumps. Do I have any free choice to act?
Answer: There are no formal requirements to provide RCD protection. This is only needed if the cables are buried in walls at less than 50mm deep and no earthed metallic sheath is surrounding the conductors.
