Q & A of the Day - Should this FCU be switched or un-switched?
Question: I'm providing the supply for an intruder alarm installation. Referring to Regulation 433.1, I intend to provide the supply from a fused spur connected to the origin of a ring CCT in the consumer unit, which is situated in an under-stairs cupboard.

Should the FCU be switched or un-switched? If switched, there is risk of accidental switching to 'off' position, as the control unit will be installed in the under-stairs cupboard. However, if un-switched, total isolation for maintenance cannot be achieved?

Answer: If it is a TN supply, use an un-switched FCU. If it is a TT supply, switched would be best.
