Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, regarding an intruder alarm installation and whether the fused connection unit (FCU) should be switched or un-switched, is answered by the ECA:

Should the FCU be switched or un-switched? If switched, there is risk of accidental switching to 'off' position, as the control unit will be installed in the under-stairs cupboard. However, if un-switched, total isolation for maintenance cannot be achieved?
Answer: If it is a TN supply, use an un-switched FCU. If it is a TT supply, switched would be best.
