Q & A of the Day – Must a wind turbine's cable be earthed both ends?

This question, and thousands of others, have been answered by our Voltimum Experts on a daily basis in the Technical Expertise area.

Question: I've recently been working for someone who is installing 17.5kW wind turbines, which he has installed with steel wire armoured cable (SWA) from the turbine. What issues are there with earthing?

He is using an earth electrode for the mast earthing, but has not earthed the SWA. Surely this needs earthing, even only at the mast end? He told me that it is not earthed because of the threat of lightning strikes.

Answer:The SWA of the connecting cable should be earthed at both ends.
