Q & A of the Day – Must I buy new software for BS7671:2008 First Amendment?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I've just received a copy of the new BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations incorporating amendment No 1; 2011.

It contains new model forms for recording the outcome from periodic inspection and test of an existing electrical installation specifically the 'Electrical Installation Condition Report' (EICR)

This was previously recorded on a Periodic Inspection Report form.

I have spent a lot of money on software for BS 7671:2008 certificates. Do I now have to purchase new software at more cost to myself, or can I still use my existing software.

Answer: Possibly, it could depend on the manufacturer of the BS 7671 software product purchased.

The 1st Amendment to BS 7671:2008 was introduced on 1st July 2011. However, a six month period was provided to enable those responsible for design, construction and inspection and testing to become familiar with its contents.

The effective date for full implementation was the 1st January 2012, and installations designed after the 31st of December 2011 are to comply with the standard in full.

The software product should, therefore, be updated to reflect the changes that have occurred in this version of the standard, and most BS 7671 software manufacturers will provide an update service where you have purchased its support package.
