Q & A of the Day - Main equipotential bonding – what type of joint?
Question: Is it acceptable to mechanically join the 10mm main equipotential bonding cable running from the consumer unit to the rising main, then onto the gas main? If yes, is there any restriction on the type of mechanical joint used?

We regularly come across bonding which is 'broken' at the mid-point and would clearly prefer to join rather than replace, if such an approach were to be acceptable under the Regulations.

Answer: Main bonding conductors may be looped from one extraneous-conductive-part to another but the conductor must be continuous. If the conductor is broken at such a point, the two conductors should be crimped together. They should be connected to pipes, etc, using an earth clamp to BS 951.
