Q & A of the Day – For this ELV fire alarm cabling containment system, is earthing required?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: If a containment system is used for extra low voltage (ELV) fire alarm cabling only, and is there just for the protection of soft skin cables, what are the requirements for earthing?

Note that the continuity of the containment may be interrupted with flexible conduit. It would also be in close proximity to other containment used for low voltage systems.

Answer: Based upon the information provided, there are no requirements for bonding the containment. Bonding would only be required if the containment system is considered an extraneous-conductive-part liable to introduce a potential under normal operating conditions.
