Q & A of the Day – A downstream fault has caused an MCC incomer to trip. What maintenance should I carry out?

Question: Following the trip of a 2000A incomer on a downstream fault with an MCC, what remedial maintenance action does ABB recommend?

Note that I’ve already recommended a full settings / discrimination review, as the outgoing feeder circuit breaker did not trip, but I would appreciate advice on the advisability of visual inspections and insulation or dielectric testing etc.

Answer: For such a situation, we recommend an insulation resistance check, a ductor test and a general inspection of the circuit breaker in accordance with the service manual of the circuit breaker concerned.

ABB’s service department can advise you further, and we have fully trained service personnel available for site visits to check the circuit breaker for you.
