Q & A of the Day – Does BS7671 limit the socket numbers in a ring or radial main?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: Can you please advise me as to any limitations concerning the number of single-phase 16A socket outlets that can be established on to a proper final radial or ring circuit - in line with BS7671:2008 (2011)?

Answer: The regulations do not state a maximum number of sockets, so therefore it is potentially limitless.

However, Appendix 16 gives guidance, and states that a ring main should not exceed 100m squared in its size. At the design stage, the power demand should be confirmed so as to be able to decide whether to install one or more circuits for the provision of socket outlets on the installation.

If one circuit was installed - and overload is an issue - then the electrician may need to consider installing supplementary power circuits.
