Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning ECS and CSCS cards, is answered by the ECA:

I have noticed in quite a few construction and building adverts that some electrical employers require holders of the CSCS, while others want ECS. I've been looking into this as I have recently completed my City & Guilds 2330 electrical installation course, and I now need to get on site to carry out my NVQ Level 3.
My understanding is that the ECS is the 'CSCS equivalent for electricians', and so I will not need a CSCS card. But my confusion is, do I need an ECS card, a CSCS card, or both?
Answer: The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) is the electrical industry skills card. The ECS card may also have the CSCS endorsement (on the same card), if the applicant has passed the Heath and Safety Assessment test, as required by CSCS.
For further information regarding this, you can contact the Joint Industry Board (JIB) on tel. 020 8302 0031.
