Q & A of the Day – Do bathroom lighting circuits need RCD protection?
Question: I recently contacted you regarding wiring within bathrooms and you gave me good advice on the subject. However, I am now getting conflicting information from our contractor and wondered if you could clarify the position.

We are replacing the bathroom light fitting and he has indicated that he has to protect the lighting circuit with an RCBO to comply with the 17th Edition. Also if there is an electric heater sited in the bathroom this also will have to be upgraded to RCBO protection.

Could you confirm that this is a requirement?

Answer: If the only work you are carrying out is the replacement of the light fitting, I would recommend that you provide RCD protection for the lighting circuit. You would not, in my opinion, be required to provide RCD protection for other circuits within the bathroom, although this could be commented on in any certification provided.
