Q & A of the Day – Can I place 230V AC and 230V DC cables inside the same containment?

Matthew Foster asks a question about 230V AC and 230V DC cabling inside trunking systems. It is answered by SELECT (Theme – Cables and Wiring):

Q & A of the Day – Can I place 230V AC and 230V DC cables inside the same containment?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: For cables that supply 230V DC - are they allowed to bunch with 230V AC cables inside the same cable conduit or trunking?

If not, what is the correct way to install both 230V DC and AC cables.

Also, what are the necessary precautions needed to avoid electric shock for the 230V DC system?

The 230V DC source is from a LED lighting controller/power supply unit, with a 230V AC input. The LED luminaires' voltage input is 230V DC.

Answer: DC and AC cables should ideally be installed in separate containment systems or segregated - if installed in the same trunking.

A label to indicate DC cabling is also recommended - as is obtaining advice from the manufacturer when applicable.
