Q & A of the Day – Can I lay PVC insulated cable loose along a concrete deck?
Question: Is there any regulatory reason not to lay domestic PVC insulated cable loose along the concrete deck under a ground floor raised timber floor. I can't find any specific ruling in the Regulations, so as long as one complies with the normal standards of it being a non-regularly accessed area, free from mechanical stresses, flora, fauna, solar etc., and that the surface will not damage the cable, it should - as far as I can tell - be ok. What do you think?

Answer: Regulation 522-08-04 BS7671:2001 requires that, where cables are not supported continuously by their method of installation, they shall be supported by suitable means so that the cables do not suffer damage through their own weight. With this in mind, if the cables are laid on the concrete, not subject to weight problems and unlikely to be subject to mechanical damage, then this would appear to be ok.
