Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, about BS 7671 and the distance requirement for water stopcock bonding, is answered by SELECT:

Answer: Yes - Regulation 547-02-02 states that the connection of main bonding conductors should be made as near as practicable to the service at point of entry to the building before any branch pipework.
And Voltimum UK managing editor James Hunt says: The 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations has just been published, so this user's question needs to be seen in that light. Note that the requirements of the 17th Edition are different from those of the 16th Edition in terms of bonding. For example, Section 701 in the 17th Edition covers locations containing a bath or a shower. In terms of earth bonding in bathrooms, no longer is supplementary equipotential bonding required in bathrooms. However, with regard to this users' specific question, refer to the 17th Edition.
Full 17th Edition implementation will be on July 1st. Over the next six-months, the 16th Edition will be phased out and 17th Edition will be implemented. Within this period, installations can comply with either. After 2nd July 2008, installations should comply only with the 17th Edition. For longer-term projects with overlap, the client concerned must be made aware of the situation.
