Mark is a designer with twenty seven years experience in theatre and architecture. After designing over one hundred shows, he became an Associate for MBLD in 1998 and joined BDP in 2003. Mark believes that collaboration is essential for great design. He has recruited a vibrant team from varied backgrounds, including product designers, engineers, theatre designers and architects, forging them into a winning force in international lighting design.

Human interaction with architecture through the medium of light is central to his philosophy and practice. 

His projects are varied, covering commercial, public realm, leisure, retail, art and art galleries, exterior architecture, transport and daylight design. Currently he is project director for  two supranational retail developments in the Middle East and has just been commissioned for another three in China as well as leading the team on projects for the V&A, Harrods and Nike.

Mark has many internationally award winning projects to his name, notably an Award of Merit for Princesshay, Exeter, Building Service and FX Award nominations for Wellington Arch, London and ECOS, Ballymena, The Civic Trust Award for the Riverside Theatre, Louth and the IALD Award of Excellence for Finsbury Avenue Square, London.  BDP have been nominated for at least one National Lighting Design Award every year since 2005.

Mark is regularly invited to speak at industry events, in 2010 in Berlin and Denmark and at the UK OLED Summit alongside Ingo Maurer. He serves on various technical committees for the ILP, has authored the PLDA ethics policy, is one of the founders of the Joined Up Lighting initiative, hosting regular seminars for industry professionals at the BDP offices and is the first ever Chartered Lighting Designer through the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP). Most recently Mark has become Vice President for Architectural Lighting for the ILP.

Mark’s talk set out some of the issues behind truly sustainable lighting design illustrated by his latest project for PwC at More London, the UK’s first major BREEAM Outstanding building. He explains that energy efficiency is only part of the story, and explains the essential importance of delivering a socially effective environment.
