Looking after your VDE tools might not be top of the list on a busy day, but it makes a real difference.
A few simple checks and a bit of regular maintenance can help keep them working properly, lasting longer and, importantly, staying safe to use. To show how straightforward it can be, KNIPEX has produced a short video demonstrating how to care for VDE pliers in day-to-day use.
The KNIPEX Diagonal Cutter VDE (70 06 160), featured in the video, is a good example. Designed for everyday electrical work, its narrow head makes it ideal for confined spaces such as junction boxes and distribution boards; its long cutting edges allow even fine-stranded conductors to be cut cleanly right to the tip, which is particularly useful when working in restricted spaces. The precision cutting edges are induction hardened to approximately 62 HRC and the multi-component VDE grips, tested to IEC 60900 / DIN EN 60900, provide insulation and a secure, comfortable hold when working on electrical systems.
However, even a well-made tool needs the right care to keep performing at its best and for VDE tools in particular, regular checks are essential to maintain both performance and safety. But keeping cutters in good condition doesn’t need to be complicated. As shown in the KNIPEX video, simply wiping tools down after use, drying them carefully and applying a light layer of oil helps protect against moisture and corrosion. Adding a small drop of lubricant to the joint keeps the action smooth and reduces wear over time and checking the insulation on the handles regularly will ensure they stay safe to use and compliant for electrical work.
Looking after your VDE tools doesn’t take long but it makes a big difference. A few simple steps can help keep cutters performing as they should, extend their working life and ensure they remain safe and reliable on site.
