In the following presentation, Mark Coles takes a look, over 41 colourful pages, at the history the Wiring Regulations from the first in 1882 to the present day, and he also provides an overview of BS 7671:2008 (2011) and the various statutory requirements.

More importantly from the perspective of this VoltiTECH, he looks at the planned amendments, as well as guidance publications and where they sit. He concludes with a useful Q&A.

The history of BS 7671:

The Wiring Regulations were first issued in 1882 by the Society of Telegraph Engineers and of Electricians. It comprised a mere four pages and 21 Regulations. In 2008 the 17th Edition (BS 7671:2008) was published, consisting - by comparison - of 389 pages and 1108 regulations. In 2011, the First Amendment to BS 7671:2008 was published. This consisted of 463 pages and 1274 Regulations.

In terms of the planned amendments, BS 7671:2008 - Amendment No.2 - should be with us soon this year, while Amendment No.3 is scheduled for 2015.
