Case Study: Overcoming workplace harassment and coercive control

Published: 2 October 2026 Category: News

Power imbalances can create harmful and damaging workplace situations, leaving individuals feeling trapped and powerless. This was sadly the case for Marie, an industry professional who experienced ongoing harassment from a senior colleague following the breakdown of their personal relationship.

Case Study: Overcoming workplace harassment and coercive control

Marie contacted the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) while in a state of acute distress. The emotionally abusive nature of the relationship and the harassment that followed had left her exhausted, overwhelmed, and struggling to cope.

The imbalance of power within the relationship created a coercive dynamic that quickly extended into the workplace. After the relationship ended, Marie faced persistent harassment from her former partner, creating a hostile working environment that had a profound impact on her wellbeing. Over time, the situation led to severe anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and a significant decline in her mental health.

Unable to face returning to the toxic environment, Marie was signed off work on sick leave. As her situation worsened, she began actively planning her resignation, placing both her career and financial stability at serious risk.

From her very first conversation with the EIC, Marie's Case Manager reassured her that all support would remain strictly confidential. This gave her the safe and trusted space she needed to speak openly about her experiences without fear of repercussions from her employer or colleagues.

Recognising the extent of the trauma and anxiety she was experiencing, the EIC arranged specialist face-to-face counselling with a therapist experienced in supporting survivors of abuse. This provided Marie with the dedicated support she needed to begin processing the emotional impact of what she had endured.

Alongside her mental health recovery, the EIC worked closely with Marie to develop a practical plan for her future, helping her navigate an impending career transition and explore her options with confidence.

Through a combination of specialist counselling, emotional support, and practical guidance, Marie gradually rebuilt her confidence and sense of self-worth. With the right support in place, she was able to protect her employment rights, make informed decisions about her future, and successfully transition into a healthy and supportive new working environment.

Marie’s experience highlights the devastating impact that coercive control and workplace harassment can have on an individual's mental health, career, and financial security. It also demonstrates the importance of early intervention and confidential support. By providing compassionate, tailored assistance during a time of crisis, the EIC helped Marie regain control of her life, rebuild her confidence, and move forward with hope. No one should have to face abuse or harassment alone, and with the right support, recovery and a positive future are possible.
