Why is UGR19 rated lighting so important in an office environment?

UGR, which stands for Unified Glare Rating, is the term used to describe the amount of glare generated by a lighting product. They are provided by a manufacturer to allow specifiers or contractors to determine how much discomfort could be caused by the luminaire when working under its light.

Why is UGR19 rated lighting so important in an office environment?

Importance of UGR in Offices

When specifying lighting for an office environment it is important to to consider the UGR rating of panels being installed to ensure that they are suitable for staff to work under for approximately 8 hours each day.

For a luminaire to be classified as low glare it must have a UGR of ≤19 at desk level.

There are a range of UGR requirements for a range of applications:

UGR <10 - Imperceptible
UGR <13 - Just perceptible
UGR <16 - Perceptible
UGR <19 - Just Acceptable
UGR <22 - Unacceptable
UGR <25 - Just uncomfortable
UGR <28 - Uncomfortable
