The circuit behind the smart home: Why AV engineers should be specifying the ABB SCU200

Energy costs have risen sharply, and a growing number of homeowners who have treated power as a fixed background expense now want to see it, understand it and control it. Solar, battery storage and EV chargers have become standard line items on residential projects, and time-of-use tariffs have made energy management something clients expect to interact with daily — on the same screen they use for lighting and climate.

The ABB SCU200 InSite system is built to help meet those expectations. For AV and smart home integrators, it's a natural extension of the systems you already design and support.

What the SCU200 InSite system does

The SCU200 is the control unit at the heart of ABB's InSite platform. It pulls live data from meters, circuit sensors, breakers, EV chargers and solar or battery inverters via Modbus-RTU, Ethernet or ABB's InSite flat cable, giving a real-time and historical picture of how a property consumes and generates electricity, down to individual circuits.

Plug-in expansion modules allow installers to start small and add channels as a project grows, and ABB's ultra-compact circuit sensors fit inside a standard consumer unit rather than requiring a dedicated enclosure.

Built for residential installs

Commercial-grade monitoring hardware often assumes a facilities team and a dedicated BMS contractor. The SCU200 is scaled the other way, sitting comfortably in a domestic distribution board alongside standard MCBs and RCBOs. It is wired once at first fix and runs without ongoing management. Because it communicates over Modbus-RTU and standard Ethernet, it slots into the same network infrastructure already running for AV, lighting and Wi-Fi, with no proprietary bus and no separate contractor required.

Connecting into the ecosystems your clients already use

ABB has built InSite to integrate across major smart home platforms rather than locking usage data into a standalone app. Samsung SmartThings is a notable example: through SmartThings' energy monitoring, SCU200 data can surface in the same app residents use for lighting, climate and security. ABB also offers its own app and web dashboards, showing consumption by circuit and tariff-based cost. For integrators fluent in cross-platform work, the SCU200 functions as another data source woven into the client's existing control environment.

Control4 BMS Monitor: One screen for the whole utility picture

For Control4 projects, Janus Technology's Control4 BMS Monitor displays energy, HVAC and utility data without leaving the Control4 environment. It is a driver-level solution pulling readings from thermostats, energy meters and utility devices, including the ABB SCU200, into a web interface accessible from T3/T4 touchscreens, the Control4 app, or any browser on the network. Historical data is stored on the main controller, with up to 10,000 samples retained per monitored element, so trends survive restarts without a separate server or cloud subscription.

The ABB SCU200 Driver for Control4, also from Janus Technology, connects to the SCU200 and exposes every meter and sensor as native Control4 data — imported and exported energy, live power draw, current and voltage — for each circuit. Paired with Control4 BMS Monitor, it turns readings into graphs homeowners will actually use. For the integrator, this transforms energy monitoring from a hardware sale into a fully supported system, with no third-party app to manage separately.

Specify it at first fix

The SCU200 is best specified at first fix, when planning channel count is straightforward. However, its open-core, cable-tie sensor version also allows clean retrofitting into existing installations without breaking into cabling or replacing terminations.

If Control4 is your platform, specifying the SCU200 in the electrical design and adding the Driver for Control4 and BMS Monitor to your programming scope turns a distribution board into a dashboard your client will actually use.
