Voltimum - A VDE torque screwdriver for the 17th Edition

Published: 5 April 2012 Category: Technical articles

Wiha is a German tool specialist that, the company claims, was the first to combine torque accuracy and with VDE compliance. The result is what the company calls the ‘Ultimate Electricians Screwdriver’ - the TorqueVario VDE torque screwdriver:

Voltimum - A VDE torque screwdriver for the 17th Edition
The UK Wiring Regulations - BS7671:2008 (First Amendment) states in Section 134.1.1: 'Good workmanship by competent persons or persons under their supervision and proper materials shall be used in the erection of the electrical installation. Electrical equipment shall be installed in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the equipment'.

Therefore, when the manufacturer of an item of electrical equipment advises: 'Tighten the terminal screws to 2.8Nm', and you want to follow the regulations, then how can it be correctly achieved?

Torque-setting screwdrivers:

Exact torque values can be accurately achieved by any number of torque-setting screwdrivers. Made by various leading manufacturers, torque screwdrivers range from around £60 to over £200. The most accurate and reliable versions pass the BS EN6789 standards. Such versions are always marked with individual serial numbers, accompanied by a matching certificate and are fully traceable should proof of their functionality ever be questioned.

Torque screwdrivers are already the choice where performance, accuracy and reliability are critical - Formula One racing car teams, defence, mobile phone and aircraft manufacturers all rely on their function. Most electrical installers only ever use insulated tools, and this 'VDE-or-nothing' mentality - says Wiha - means that some of them know little about torque setting screwdrivers.

Wiha specialises in both fields - electricians VDE screwdrivers and also BS EN6789 compliant torque screwdrivers, so it had the expertise to design a professional torque setting screwdriver that also passes the strict VDE testing process.

The TorqueVario VDE offers electrical installers the security of 1000V insulation, along with the ability to adhere to the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, with a tool meeting UK and European Standards of accuracy and reliability.
