Q & A of the Day - What code for this departure?

Published: 9 April 2009 Category: Q&A

Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, concerning a departure from norm in a Periodic Electrical Inspection, is answered by the NICEIC:

Question: While carrying out a Periodic Electrical Inspection it was found that the CPC (R2) conductors of the ring main were discontinuous, although the line (R1) and neutral (Rn) conductors of the circuit were continuous.

There is an 'earth' at every socket-outlet on the ring main and a Zs reading obtained at every socket-outlet indicates that the circuit protection would operate in the specified times. The ring main is also 30mA RCD protected.

What code should be attributed to this departure?

Answer: Code 2 - Requires improvement - unless there is significant risk of electrocution or fire - in which case a Code 1 should be applied.
