Q & A of the Day – How to test for lighting protection?
Question: We need to install lightning protection services (LPS) at a mobile phone site and I have mislaid the details for calculating the number of rods required to achieve a meter reading of 10 ohms.

I drove in one earth rod and tested it, and achieved a reading of 268 ohms. What is the calculation I need to use to find out how many rods that I need to install? Note that the ground is very peaty.

Answer: The short answer is that we can advise how to test, but I think you know that already. BS 6651:Code of practice for protection of structures against lightning will be useful. Also visit www.furse.com for much more information on lightning protection products and services.
