Q & A of the Day - Do these old sockets on skirting boards comply with the 17th Edition?
Question: We are about to start a complete re-wiring of an old house in Edinburgh. The client has requested that the sockets remain on the skirting boards. Most of these are the large type and will comply with current height regulations. However, two bedrooms have smaller skirting boards, and we won't be able to comply with the regulations. Is this permissible?

Answer: Wiring accessories must be mounted at a height that will make them accessible, yet minimise the risk for mechanical damage (e.g. being struck by hoovers and the like), or movement of furniture.

Also, the arrangements must allow a bending radius for larger diameter or stiff flexible cords. This information can be sought from BS7671:2008, Regulation 553.1.6. I hope this answers your question.
