Q & A of the Day – Can a cooker switch be located in a kitchen cupboard?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I’ve just wiring a new kitchen in an extension to a house, and the customer has requested that the 45A cooker switch be installed in the back of a cupboard, instead of on the wall.

I would not normally do this as - in my opinion - it should be on the wall and accessible, and not tucked away behind loads of stuff in a cupboard.

Is there any specific regulation to back me up?

Answer: It is acceptable to mount a cooker switch in a cupboard, provided that the switch is readily accessible.

This is one of a number of questions on BS 7671:2008 answered by a forum of technical representatives from a number of trade bodies, including SELECT.
