Do I record the highest value obtained on my RCD readings?

Published: 27 July 2020 Category: Q&A

Our ECA expert helps out a Voltimum user with a question on the best way to deal with a technical conundrum.

Do I record the highest value obtained on my RCD readings?

Question:

Hi, when recording readings for (RCD-30- ma) (devices to 61008-1) a schedule of test results, am I correct in thinking you record the highest value obtained for example as below, testing both halves of the wave form at (0-180) (6) tests in total - recording the highest reading taken between cycles.

x-1/2 (In) no trip
x-1 (In) under (300ms)
x-5 in under (40ms)

Or do I record the (x 5) reading only?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Hi there.

It would depend on what the purpose of the RCD is.  If it is for additional protection then you would record the value of the equal to or higher than 5 times the rated current, Regulation 643.8 discusses this.

In many cases a 30 mA RCD will be used for additional protection so you are often best off recorded the 5 times (or higher) value for 30 mA RCDs and for >30 mA RCDs the 1 times would suffice.

Thanks
