Q & A of the Day – Is this metal cabinet with lights safe in a bathroom?
Question: A customer of mine has purchased a chrome bathroom cabinet with two 12V lamps attached. The transformer for the lamps is contained in the cabinet to be supplied by a 240V input.

However, the location she would like it mounted could be reached by someone standing in the bath. Having informed her that I cannot site it where she wants it, and why, she is somewhat sceptical - using the premise that no one would be doing that. Perhaps you could verify this?

The cabinet was expensive and she loves it!

Answer: As you will be aware, BS7671: 2008 (17th Edition) bathroom zones will apply for new installations, and any item of equipment should be suitable for installation in that zone.

In addition all circuits should now have additional protection by a 30mA RCD.
