Q & A of the Day – Can these flats’ earthing system be run outside?

Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, about external earthing for flats, is answered by SELECT:

Question: I’m working on a couple of flats, which require upgrading of the main earthing system. Note that there is a shared metering cabinet located on the far side of one of the flats.

Can I run the new earthing on the exterior of the building in either plastic or metal conduit?

Answer: I presume that your question relates to the installation of main protective bonding conductors and not main earthing conductors? Normally, these would be installed inside the building and in such a way as to protect the conductor from mechanical damage.

If your question does relate to main protective bonding conductors, then I do not know why you need to go external - i.e. the main protective bonding conductor would be connected at the MET, which could be the suppliers' cable head, but more likely a connection block or the earth terminal inside the consumer unit!

If your question actually relates to the installation of a main earthing conductor, I am surprised that the distributor's connection is so far from the actual installation - meter tails are usually limited to no more than 3m in length - where longer than this, usual practice would be to install a suitable sub main.
