RCBO protection for 110V centre-tapped power supplies

Published: 25 July 2003 Category: News

In response to customer demand, Eaton MEM Circuit Protection and Control has introduced a range of RCBOs (combined miniature circuit-breakers and residual current devices) for 110V power supplies, centre tapped to earth:

These new Eaton MEM Circuit Protection and Control RCBOs are intended for environments where users demand the highest standards of safety with equipment operating through 110V power supplies. They can also be used in situations where the conditions for automatic disconnection of the supply, as laid down in BS 7671 (The IEE Wiring Regulations), cannot be assured due to uncertain earth fault loop impedance values.

Typical applications would include construction sites, where 110V centre-tapped supplies are the norm. However, the first two applications were for an outdoor market and in a dockyard. Having supplied the RCBOs to special order for these applications, Eaton MEM decided to add 110V double-pole devices to its standard product range.

Features of the new RCBO:

The new 110V RCBOs use Eaton MEM's innovative RCD 'pod' system. They comprise a two-pole MCB with a field-fittable RCD 'pod'. This makes it possible to select any combination of overcurrent protection and residual current sensitivity.

The double-pole circuit-breakers are available in ratings from 6A to 63A with Type B or C operating characteristics. The 110V RCD pods are supplied separately, with a choice of 30mA or 100mA residual current sensitivity.

110V centre-tapped power supplies are provided via a transformer with an earth tapping in the centre of the secondary winding. This means that an earth fault will be at a maximum of 55V.

An increasing demand:

"We believe that demand for 110V RCBOs will increase as more and more authorities, conscious of their duty of care, look for something more than the basic protection offered by a 110V centre-tapped power supply" says David Pitt, Product Manager for circuit-breakers at Eaton MEM Circuit Protection and Control.

MEM Circuit Protection and Control, a member of the Eaton Corporation, is the leading British manufacturer of commercial and industrial circuit protection equipment. The normal 'pod' RCBO range includes factory-assembled 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A and 32A single-pole Type C devices with a 10mA or 30mA RCD sensitivity. However, the total MCB range covers Types B, C and D, devices in ratings from 1A to 63A; pods are available in 10mA, 30mA and 100mA instantaneous and 100mA and 300mA time-delayed versions. This gives over 800 possible RCBO combinations.
