Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, about BS7671:2008 and interconnected smoke alarm cables, is answered by the NICEIC:
Question: When installing interconnected smoke alarms with three-core and e cable, using one of the cores as the interconnect, is there an issue with separation of the supply and interconnection circuits within the one cable?
Answer: Reg group 528 of BS7671: 2008, requires every cable or conductor of a Band 1/Band 2 circuit contained within the same wiring system to be insulated for the highest voltage present. Therefore, flat three-core+CPC cable to BS6004 6243Y insulated to 300/500V would achieve this requirement.
