Q & A of the Day – Does this fence around a chiller installation need lightning protection?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: We have erected a palisade fence around a new external compound housing three new chilled water air conditioning chiller units.

This fence stands approximately 2m from the existing building and is 18m x 7m x 6m tall. The existing building is about 10m high and has lightning protection fitted.

Is there a requirement for lightning protection to the fence that you are aware of?

Answer: There is no requirement for the fence work at this point to be bonded and this does not come under the requirements of the current BS 7671: 2008.

However, this may need to be looked at from the requirements of BS EN 62305: Protection against Lightning.
