Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, concerning the Zs and Ze readings on a shower circuit, is answered by the NICEIC:
Question: What would be the correct remedy if the Zs reading on a shower circuit is 2.14, the Ze is 2.01, and the maximum permitted on a BS 60898 type B 40 MCB is 1.15?
Answer: If your Ze is at 2.01 ohms, then unless it is a TT system - which will require RCD protection - then the local DNO should be advised to resolve the situation.
If all circuits are protected by an RCD, then the maximum Zs value should be obtained from Table 41.5 (page 50) of the current Regulations regarding TT earthing arrangements.
