With the electronics industry developing at lightning speed, it’s time traditional ways of working caught up with modern developments. No longer is it feasible to rely upon paper-based electronical guidelines to check charts. For one, these may not always be to hand, and secondly, searching through reams of text can be quite time-consuming for busy sparks. But surely there’s another way?

The app
The Electrical Tools (and Reference) app was developed by a seasoned electrician with 25 years’ experience working in the field to make life that little bit easier and quicker for electricians out and about on jobs. Packed full of the commonly used charts needed to carry out everyday jobs, as well as in-built, pre-programmed calculators for quick and easy access, the app reducing the need to carry around the regulations handbook (BS 7671) – speeding up the whole process as a result.
The development
The app came about as a result of the aforementioned stresses associated with carrying out site jobs. Noticing that the one thing I always had to hand was my mobile phone, I realised the answer to this age-old issue was to develop an app
containing all the necessary information needed to complete jobs there and then. However with no technical experience under my belt, I decided to approach the professionals. But as you well know, app development is a hot
topic right now. And consequently, the sheer demand, as well as the knowledge and time required to carry out developments, meant that the costs associated with realising my dream were just too high.
Not deterred, I spent the following months teaching myself app programming. Starting with the Windows mobile operating system, before moving on to Android, and finally, cracking iOS development, it was an extremely tough
learning curve and took months to perfect from start to finish. But once the app became a reality on each platform in turn, I knew this could define the industry and bring it bang into the 21st century.
How it assists electricians
Speeds up jobs
Let’s say an electrician has the book to hand – either in his van or bag. By the time he’s found it, looked up which page he needs, and found the relevant data, he could’ve finished the job – simply by putting his hand in his pocket and
tapping a few buttons. So by providing instant access to vital information, the app reduces the amount of time spent looking up guidelines in the electrician’s bible, the BS 7671 handbook, and makes them infinitely more efficient.
Cuts down on mistakes
Experienced sparks will know a lot more than an amateur. But that doesn’t mean to say they know everything. And sometimes human error occurs and mistakes are made. Having all the information they could possibly need in the palm of their hand makes it quick and easy for both experienced electricians and newbies to get it right first time.
Leaves customers happy
A swift and competent worker will always rate more highly with customers than a slow one that makes mistakes. Ensuring 100% customer satisfaction every time, the app is invaluable for small one man bands that rely on word of mouth, and large electronics firms that have a reputation to keep up.
Examples of use
While carrying out an electrical inspection (EICR) to an existing installation, I was able to check and verify the relevant maximum permissible Zs values for each MCB and RCBO, and verify the readings I was obtaining. Ensuring instant access to this vital information, it saved time, money, and guaranteed safety at all times.
