Eaton MEM makes a splash in a timber wharf

Published: 23 July 2003 Category: News

Special versions of the modern Ultra wiring accessories from Eaton's MEM 250 have been supplied, together with other wiring accessories and consumer units, for a prestigious mixed residential/commercial development in Manchester:

Timber Wharf in the Britannia Basin is one of three developments by Urban Splash, the award-winning property development company. Britannia Basin is an urban regeneration initiative on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal. Within the overall development two existing properties, Britannia Mills and The Box Works, have been redeveloped by Urban Splash as mixed commercial/residential sites. Timber Wharf is a new-build project comprising 11 floors with 181 luxury apartments, 20 live/work units, and two floors of car parking. It includes one and two bedroom apartments with en suite bathroom facilities, six duplex apartments and 15 penthouses.

The use of Eaton MEM 250 wiring accessories and circuit protection equipment was recommended by the electrical contractor, Cegelec.

The electrical equipment:

Electrical supplies to each apartment are provided by Memera 2000AD 19-way consumer units. These include Eaton MEM's innovative single-module 'pod' RCBO units to protect the power circuits serving the kitchen and living areas. This ensures maximum safety of users. Other circuits feeding lighting, security systems and the all-electric space and water heating systems are protected by miniature circuit-breakers.

The space and water heating loads are controlled by a DIN rail mounted contactor within the Memera 2000AD unit. This is switched by a radio telecontrol signal via a pilot wire linked to a group controller in the basement of the building.

Eaton MEM 250 floor-mounted socket-outlets have been used in lounge and bedroom areas where the pre-cast concrete structure did not lend itself to installing flush accessories in the wall. These have a hinged cover to protect the socket; the cover and plate are each 1.5mm thick and have a modern brushed stainless steel finish.

In the same areas, TV outlets, telephone outlets, fused connection units and other accessories, which are also floor-mounted, have been selected from the new Ultra range. This features flat plates, which are only 1.5mm thick. The accessories have a brushed stainless steel finish and were specially produced by Eaton's MEM 250 to match the edge profile of the floor-mounted socket-outlets.

Plates in alternative finishes:

One of the features of the Ultra range is that, in addition to an extended range of 'standard' plates and finishes, Eaton MEM 250 can supply plates in alternative finishes (notably 180 RAL colours) and can offer special plates made to order. In this case the plates have been produced with a 1mm radiused edge. However, it is also possible to produce plates in special shapes or in larger sizes to accommodate special combinations of wiring accessories.

Elsewhere in the Timber Wharf apartments, the company's white moulded switches and power accessories have been installed. These have also been used in communal areas while surface metalclad accessories are used in the car parks. Distribution boards in these areas are from the Memshield 2 range, produced by another Eaton MEM company, Eaton MEM Circuit Protection and Control.
