Converged decision-making is ABB’s theme for DCD 2014
ABB has made converged decision making for data centres its theme for this year’s DatacenterDynamics Converged (DCD) event, taking place at ExCeL, London on November 19th and 20th. Visitors to Stand 303 are invited to talk to ABB’s experts about its complete portfolio of data centre products and integrated solutions.

For those visitors who are also interested in professional lighting, there’s more at ExCel on the same two days, with LuxLive 2014, the UK’s largest and most important lighting event – and Voltimum has a stand there (H40).

But back to ABB, and the company’s converged decision making philosophy is based on its intelligent power and automation solutions. Until now, data centres have always been about facilities, IT and finance. The difference is that now ABB can provide the platform to help data centre designers and developers, owners and operators, IT equipment manufacturers and utilities make decisions based on reliable, consistent and real-time data.

This converged decision making philosophy delivers intelligent management of critical data centre energy infrastructure, including electrical distribution and automation. It enables owners and operators to know exactly what is happening and why, to understand the impact of their operational, maintenance and upgrading decisions and how best to prioritise people and costs. Ultimately, it means more reliable, more available and more efficient data centres.

Putting DCIM at the heart of ABB’s philosophy

A major focus for ABB at DCD is the new Decathlon DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) system that provides industrial-grade tools to manage a flexible network of power, cooling and IT to deliver data services faster, in the most reliable, efficient and sustainable way possible. Decathlon enables data centre owners and operators to manage and optimize their 3 Cs: cost, capacity and control.

More than a traditional building management system (BMS) or a building automation system (BAS), Decathlon provides visibility, decision support and centralised control technologies across data centre operations worldwide through a single operational environment. It is the only DCIM system that tightly integrates with third party solutions.

Decathlon helps identify system performance and environmental factors that would typically go unnoticed until it is too late. Decision support is provided in a context-sensitive manner, so that historical trends, forecasts, workflow processes, intelligent alarms and incident reporting provide the right information quickly for rapid response and resolution. In addition, the centralised controls enable efficiencies through automation, helping to reduce human error.

All these capabilities are provided through real-time monitoring and analytics based on ABB's rich history in mission critical industrial power and automation.

Expert presentations

ABB experts are making two presentations on the first day of DCD – November 19th.

In the Design and Strategy Stream, at 15.20, Peter Jones, ABB’s Technology Strategy Manager, will present: ‘A description of ABB’s current limiter technology and how this can be applied to lower capital costs in large capacity infrastructures where fault ratings are becoming more critical.’

In the Solution Stage 1 Stream, at 16.20, Arun Shenoy, ABB’s Head of European Data Centre Automation, will present: ‘Learning the lessons from other mission critical industries.’
