MGE UPS Systems has available a new and comprehensive solution for Voice over IP (VoIP) networks, PoE Midspans, supervisory software and associated services:
IP telephony technology reduces telephone bills and provides a wide variety of combined voice, data and image applications, as well as increasing flexibility and generally simplifying the infrastructure. However, using a common infrastructure for data and voice transmission makes the quality and continuity of the telephony service extremely sensitive to power cuts and surges. Protecting PoE midspans with UPS' provide high availability power to the VoIP network.
A natural extension:
IEEE 802.3af 'Power over Ethernet' is recognised by all major manufacturers as the standard for supplying remote power to telephones using Ethernet, ensuring interoperability between equipment. The two main PoE solutions are endspan, where the power supply is integrated in the latest generation of edge switches, and midspan, which retains the existing edge switches to provide flexibility and deployment speed. The midspan solution is a natural extension of the uninterruptible supply downstream and MGE's new range of fully plug-and-play universal midspans provide protected power to both PoE and pre-IEEE 802 3af terminals.

Protected at low cost:
Telephone over IP protected by a UPS system can be deployed simply and at low cost. A single UPS installed near the edge switches and Power over Ethernet source in the network equipment room or floor enclosure provides protection for both the edge switches and all the telephones. A similar approach is recommended for deploying a wireless network, where the WiFi access points can have a remote, protected supply from the edge switch enclosure.
Only a single cable network is required for the data and the power supply and, in most cases, this cabling infrastructure already exists. With a midspan, installation is virtually transparent, causing less than a one minute break in the network service. The infrastructure and all network elements are then protected for a modest investment. IP communication is thus always available, even during power failures.
Centralised UPS system supervision program:
To improve the reliability of equipment powered by MGE Midspan, their operation, as well as the operation of the UPS', can be monitored remotely using Enterprise Power Manager, a new centralised UPS system supervision program. MGE UPS network cards and proxy agents (embedded Web server, SNMP compatibility) provide users with a wide range of remote UPS management functions including configuring shutdowns, programming actions to respond to events, predicting the time before total battery discharge when there is a power failure, generating alarms, and integration into network management systems such as HP Openview. Enterprise Power Manager automatically recognises the midspan and UPS', sends alarms and critical messages to the administrator and enables equipment or the individual supply to each RJ-45 port to be turned on or off remotely.
