Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning the fitting of a spur socket with external cable routing, is answered by the ECA:
Question: A customer has requested the fitting of a spur socket. The only practical cable routing would be to drill out and run it in heavy-duty plastic conduit on an outside wall, and then back into the house.
Does this require RCD protection?
Note that there is no RCD in the consumer unit.
Answer: From your description, the cable doesn't need additional RCD protection, but the socket outlet does - unless it is for specific purpose and labelled accordingly.
An RCD protected socket outlet may be the answer.
