The Challenge

Johannesburg is characterized by a noticeable contrast between affluent and less affluent areas. The city faces various challenges, which can result in streets being dark at night. This can make commuting between work, school, and home more difficult. For those traveling from outlying areas to the inner city, using the Nelson Mandela Bridge may not always be feasible, leading to longer travel times and adding to their daily challenges.

The solution

JoziMyJozi is a movement for the people, by the people. A movement to ignite hope and instill pride in the city of Johannesburg South Africa. The JoziMyJozi movement is an ODE representing a consortium of companies and private individuals across both the private and public sectors. LEDVANCE South Africa was approached by JoziMyJozi to inspire sustainable solutions for the inner city and create a snowball of positive change that can spreads across South Africa.

The Nelson Mandela Bridge Project was launched to restore the bridge's lights, symbolizing a beacon of change and hope. This initiative marked the beginning of the Jozi MyJozi movement. In collaboration with our business partners, we retrofitted the Nelson Mandela Bridge with RGBW floodlights providing a dynamic and customized lighting solution. The project continued to roll out with the installation of LEDVANCE Performance Solar Streetlights 60W 4000K, starting from Jan Smuts / Empire to The Maharishi Institute, and subsequently in various other areas across Johannesburg.

The benefits

Johannesburg's iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge on Ntemi Piliso Street and surrounds have been illuminated by LEDVANCE Performance Solar Streetlights 60W 4000K, ensuring continuous illumination even during power outages. Additionally, the bridge is enhanced with 8° Beam RGBW Floodlights. This initiative aims not only to enhance the aesthetic appeal of these significant urban landmarks but also to improve safety for commuters, fostering a sense of pride, security, and community within Johannesburg.

Summary

Civic engagement combined with an innovative solar lighting concept from LEDVANCE has made the Nelson Mandela Bridge – one of South Africa’s most important landmarks – safe and visible once again. In just three weeks, LEDVANCE, one of the world’s leading providers of general lighting, transformed the iconic yet dilapidated bridge in the heart of Johannesburg into a shining beacon.
