Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, about Part P of the Building Regulations and notification of other peoples' work, is answered by NAPIT:

Question: I am an approved electrician and am registered with NAPIT. I have recently been told that legislation states that I cannot notify work carried out by other people, even if I have tested it. Is this correct? If it is correct, how do large companies come off with people notifying jobs that other people have carried out tested?

Answer: As a approved electrician, you are allowed to certificate an installation carried out by a 3rd party, but you are responsible, and sign for testing only, if you have not verified 1st and 2nd fixes. Building control issues the Part P with its checks, your certificate and their price.
