As the countdown to the new electrical standards reaches the final stage, the UK’s leading awarding body for engineering vocational qualifications is urging employers, contractors and training companies to make sure that their house is in order.
As the countdown to the new electrical standards reaches the final stage, the UK’s leading awarding body for engineering National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and their Scottish equivalents (SVQs), is urging employers, contractors and training companies to make sure that their house is in order.
The ‘17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671:2008)’, published in January this year, will need to be implemented for the design of all new electrical installations in just two months - from 1st July 2008 onwards. To help with the transition, EAL has launched a series of Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQs), which specifically support BS7671:2008.
Developed in conjunction with NICEIC and the ECA, the UK's leading trade association for electrical installation and building services industries, the qualifications are designed so that qualified electricians, those returning to the trade and new apprentices entering the profession have the right skills in place.
Among the centres offering the new EAL qualifications are those run nationwide by the ECA. ECA Group Chief Executive Officer, David Pollock, said: “The ECA works closely with the Government and key national bodies to improve industry standards and procedures. The 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations are the most significant change to the electrical safety system in nearly twenty years.
“To ignore the new regulations would be a grave mistake – both from safety and a business point of view. The new qualifications developed by EAL are designed to help those involved with the industry have the right skills in place so that they can do their jobs safely and effectively.”
EAL’s Managing Director, Ann Watson, added: “The 17th edition wiring regulations incorporate substantial changes to align with European legislation. We are urging individuals and organisations to be prepared and not leave things until the last minute. Training courses are open for booking up and down the country, but are filling up rapidly as the July deadline approaches.
“We’re also providing a specially tailored assessment-only option which was developed for the ECS scheme membership - (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme). This self-study assessment-only option is available through ECA, which is open to fully qualified holders of the ECS skillcard.”
