The Background:
Royal Philips Electronics’ (NYSE:PHG,AEX:PHI) has provided a state of the art lighting installation at Manchester United. Synonymous with The Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford now has a pioneering lighting scheme which will ensure that the stadium continues to be undoubtedly one of the best and most famous sporting arenas in the world. With the largest seating capacity in the Premier League of 76,176, fans cannot fail to be impressed with the improvements this has brought to their viewing experience.

The Challenge:
Light quality and lighting uniformity therefore have to be excellent in order to permit colour TV coverage that is as good by night as by day. This is even more important with the growing demand for High Definition TV, and brilliant colour photography.

The Solution:
Meeting the high standards of the current Premier League champions, Philips installed 186 2Kw ArenaVision floodlights of which all were Hot Restrike versions. Once again Manchester United leads the way since this is a first for any UK stadium. Philips Lighting has currently floodlit 70% of all UK Premier League Clubs, 55% of the world’s major football stadiums and latterly 8 out of the 12 stadiums in Germany in the 2006 World Cup finals. With an unrivalled pedigree such as this, Philips was without doubt the ideal partner to fulfil the challenging criteria this project demanded.
Philips ArenaVision sets new standards of light distribution, enabling mounting heights to be reduced without causing glare, and keeping light where it belongs to reduce or eliminate light pollution.
To achieve the desired lighting levels and specified uniformity, the ArenaVision floodlights were mounted between 20 and 25 metres to ensure glare reduction and good vertical lighting uniformity critical for television coverage. Previously lit to an average light level of 1200 lux, the new scheme now conforms to all FIFA and UEFA regulations. The new light levels will initially provide 2600 lux at ground level which is the equivalent of five times the lighting level required in a typical office environment. Towards the main camera 2100 lux has been achieved whilst, when play is covered by the secondary camera 1000 lux is ensured.
At the Manchester United Football Club, the installation of Hot Restrike versions of the ArenaVision floodlights will guarantee this situation will not arise. To make doubly sure there was no interruption to play the club installed 2 generators in combination with the Hot Restrike system to guarantee instant reignition. Conventional lamps typically require 20 minutes to cool down before they can be utilised once more.

The Benefits:
As Ian Collins, facilities manager for the club comments, “We are delighted with the Philips ArenaVision floodlights. Not only do they provide excellent illumination directly where it is needed with no unnecessary glare but the hot re-strike system gives us the assurance of instant re-start in the unlikely event of anything going wrong.” All in all ArenaVision combines design, efficiency, ease of maintenance and reliability allowing the spectators and players to focus on the main event without distraction.
