Question: I install many recessed downlights to Part P (ie, fire hoods). I recently went to view some brand new houses in Crawley - a large estate. I had to peep just to find out that these houses did not have fire hoods. How can a large major builder get away with this? What is the point of having building inspectors if they don't check for these? Answer: It depends upon the design and construction of the building or the design of the downlighters.
It's possible that the ceiling in which the downlighters are mounted is not a fire barrier. Also, some downlighter designs do not need hoods because they are designed to maintain the fire barrier without the need for a hood.
