SELECT’s essential guide to new wiring regulations

Select

July this year sees the new BS 7671:2008 (IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition) come into effect. It is necessary for anybody involved in electrical installation work of any kind to know exactly how these changes will affect their work.

For the next few weeks SELECT, the trade association for electrical contractors in Scotland, will be continuing its recent series of seminars on the subject, staged in locations from the central belt to the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland.

SELECT’s Head of Technical Services David Millar, who is conducting the seminars, said: “The changes in the new regulations are important to anyone involved in the industry as electricians need to be fully compliant with the new standard.when it comes into effect  Short of reading the entire book the best way to gain an understanding of the key changes is by attending one of our seminars – which includes a question and answers session where any doubts can be cleared up.

“Key issues this time around include, for example, the increased focus on RCD protection, and major changes to the rules governing cables in walls – in addition to which the whole standard has been renumbered.”

He added: “Obviously these seminars are aimed primarily at SELECT members, but anyone involved in construction projects, including architects, and clerks of works should really have a good grounding in the revised  rules, which come into effect on July 1.

“We may be able to extend the seminar programme to cope with demand from other bodies but I’d advise anyone wishing to attend to contact us as soon as possible.”

Seminar dates are as follows:- Aberdeen, Friday, February 27; Edinburgh March 13 and again on April 21; Orkney, March 26; Shetland, March 27; Stornoway, April 2; Glasgow, April 22.
