| Is RCD protection needed in bathrooms? |
|
Question: If a fan or heater etc., is fitted into an existing bathroom, and the house has no RCD protection, are RCD fused spurs still allowed to control these appliances? Also, would the main earth bond to gas and water supplies have to be evident?
Answer: Yes - RCD protection would be required, and both supplementary and main earth bonding would need to be evident.
And Voltimum UK managing editor James Hunt says: The 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations was published in January, and the regulations regarding bathrooms and zones within, as well as the use of RCDs have changed. The requirements for bonding have also changed. This needs to be seen in that light. Note that full implementation of the 17th Edition will be on July 1st. Over the next four months, the 16th Edition will be phased out and 17th Edition will be implemented. Within this period, installations can comply with either. After 2nd July 2008, installations should comply only with the 17th Edition. For longer-term projects with overlap, the client concerned must be made aware of the situation.
