Cordless nailer shows choir in a new light

2008-02-15
Spit

When HSE Lighting and Electrical services was asked to install new lighting at a London church it turned to Spit to provide a quick and simple way of fixing cables to stone walls. By using the Spit Pulsa 700E cordless nailer and Prysmian Firefix cable fixings, HSE was able to complete the work in a week rather than the month it would have otherwise taken.

The Spit Pulsa 700E is ergonomically designed and  is able  to adjust its power to suit the substrate – a key factor on this job where it was important not to damage the stonework. The Fireflix clips are simply nailed directly to the stonework and clip shut to hold the cables – a special adaptor fits on the Pulsa 700E’s nail guide to hold the clips so that the tool can be used one-handed.

St Michael and All Angels Church in Mill Hill was consecrated in 1922 and was still relying on the original lighting system. Comprising of single bulb iron fittings suspended from each of the arches this was completely inadequate – not just for the congregation but also for the London Pro Arte Choir that rehearses and performs there. It was difficult for members of the congregation to read prayer and hymn books during services, and whenever the Pro Arte Choir used the building it had to bring in temporary gantry lighting.

HSE installed four new dimmable lighting circuits using 6m access towers to provide 28 new high-level spotlights. This required around 500 Firefix clips and Pulsa 700E pins to fit  several hundred metres of cable.

Jonathan Taylor of HSE said, “We chose the Spit Pulsa 700E for fast fixing into stonework. We rolled out the job in just seven days of installation, and the Firefix clips allowed us to fit the cable very neatly. The alternative would have been to drill and plug every hole and use a less attractive cable fixing, which would have taken four times as long.”

He also appreciated the support given by Spit. “We initially trialled the Pulsa  700E with Spit’s help at another site. When that proved successful they came and helped us again; we test fired it at St Michaels in a place that would not be noticeable to make sure that there would be no damage to the stone. Spit then laid on training for our team on site on the first day of installation.

“The Spit Pulsa 700E was a vast improvement on the old method and lent itself brilliantly to the job. It turned something that would have been labour intensive into something that was manageable – and the choir and congregation are delighted with the new lights.”
