St Katherine's School in North Somerset has benefited from an interactive presentation with year 10 students on energy and the environment. Read more...
The expertise and knowledge of Dalkia, the technical facilities and energy management company, provided a stimulating and informative session for the children.
“As a Science College, the workshops delivered a very important message about sustainable energy and energy usage which links very well with the ethos at St. Katherine's,” explains Head Teacher Stephanie Quayle.
The morning presentation centred around the subject of climate change. The session encouraged the students to think and discuss actions to reduce climate change. The main aim for the students was to understand the reality of the predicament businesses and organisations face on how they buy and use energy.
Conscious of how serious the topic is, Dalkia tailored the presentation in a fun and engaging way for the students to understand. There was an interactive game on laptop computers, which allowed the students to pretend they were buying fuel and electricity to run St Katherine's School. All the while the students were focussed on choosing various energy saving actions in order to reduce consumption and carbon emissions.
Dalkia looked at domestic appliances, which the students could all identify with as a way of encouraging them to start thinking about saving energy. Through the support from Dalkia's partner, Philips, Dalkia was able to give every child a low energy lamp to help them start addressing the situation and how they can make a difference.
St Katherine's School has been taking positive steps towards addressing energy and environment issues with the students. It was one of the first schools to have had a lighting refurbishment carried out by Dalkia, to improve illumination as well as efficiencies with cost and energy consumption. As a result of this, Headteacher Stephanie Quayle was enthusiastic for her students to understand the work Dalkia is undertaking as well as the broader energy and environmental issues, which are now topics on the curriculum.
“We hear everyday about global warming and how our energy consumption is responsible for climate change,” says Stephanie Quayle. “Dalkia's excellent interactive presentation and energy game encouraged our students to understand the impact of energy choices. It helped them to appreciate how individual and business decisions can affect the environment.”
Energy and environment are very much on St Katherine's agenda with the 'Eco-Schools' programme, which provides a simple framework to enable schools to analyse their operations and become more sustainable. Recycling paper and printer cartridges, installing composting areas for the eco garden and PC shut down out of school hours are all steps the eco school team have implemented. St Katherine's has also looked to renewable technology for its electricity consumption by incorporating solar panels on the roof.
