The just published 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations is expected to be implemented from 1st June 2008. Voltimum Partner Fluke has available test tools that already meet the requirements of the 17th Edition, including the requirement for RCD protection for any socket outlet with a rating not exceeding 20A intended for use by 'ordinary persons':

There are a significant number of changes and upgrades to the current 16th Edition regulations, including alignment to international standards. One change in the testing requirement within the 17th Edition is changes to insulation test limits for SELV and PELV circuits. It is therefore essential that installers ensure that the test equipment they are using, and which they intend to purchase, is ready for use with the new regulations. Fluke's 1650 Series of multifunction installation testers are ready for the 17th edition - new purchases as well as those already in the field.

The Fluke 1650 Series are ideally suited for all aspects of 17th Edition installation testing, says the company. They are extremely easy to operate, feature a large backlit display with a wide viewing angle, have an innovative ergonomic design, and a padded neck-strap to free the hands of the operator.

The 1650 Series comprises three models. The 1651 meets all the requirements of Part P. Importantly, it also performs tests of RCDs, in addition to the primary tests of voltage, frequency, continuity, insulation resistance, loop impedance, PSC and PFC tests; it uses a patented advanced loop measurement technology, claimed to be unique, to prevent electronic and passive type RCDs from tripping during earth-loop testing, whilst also giving highly consistent and repeatable results. In addition to these tests, the Fluke 1652 and 1653 can perform time-saving automatic trip time and tripping current level (ramp) tests of residual current activated devices (RCDs) - both DC-sensitive and delayed-response types. The advanced capabilities of the 1653 also enable storage of results, which can be uploaded later to a PC for software analysis, and measurement of earth resistance and phase sequence.

New purchasers of a Fluke 1652 or 1653 multifunction installation tester can take advantage of a limited time offer by claiming £125 or a free Fluke 117 DMM when trading in an old tester. After purchase, the customer simply completes a voucher and sends either an old multifunction tester, or two single-function testers, plus proof of purchase, to the company to make the claim.

The Fluke 1650 Series vouchers for the trade-in / Fluke 117 DMM promotion plus full terms and conditions can be downloaded from the Fluke web site www.fluke.co.uk/electrical or by contacting Fluke directly on 020 7942 0700. For more information, go to www.fluke.co.uk.
