Local wholesaler Edmundson’s of Twickenham has supplied Prysmian’s FP600, FP400 and FP Plus fire resistant cables. The cables have been specified to power the smoke extract fire-fighting system, the emergency lighting and public address speaker system in addition to the state-of-the art fire alarm system.

Project consultants Arup specified the cables, as electrical consultant Andrew Hudson explains: “With safety in mind, Prysmian’s FP cables were specified as they comfortably meet the requirements of applicable British Standards and are third party approved, so we know they can be trusted for venues that attract large numbers of visitors.”

The redevelopment of the South Stand began with the demolition of the old stand in July 2005 with the electrical installation starting on site in May 2006.

Senior Project Engineer, Stan Drummy, at Lorne Stewart is in charge of the smoke extract, emergency lighting and speaker system installations and saved significant time, as he explains: “The impressive user friendly construction makes Prysmian’s FP cables really easy to strip back and install, helping us to cut installation time in half.

ADT Tyco are responsible for the fire alarm installation. Project Manager, Darren Pilgrim says: “For a project of this scale it is essential to use a cable that is robust, but also allows for easy installation. Prysmian satisfies these requirements and is significantly more cost effective than using MICC.”

The new South Stand stadium bowl was completed and opened in November 2006, bringing the capacity of the stadium up to 82,000. The redevelopment, which is due to be finished in the final quarter of 2008, will also include a Marriott hotel, conference and exhibition space, a performing arts centre, a Virgin Active Health and Fitness Club, office space for the Union and a new state of the art Rugby Store.
