Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning Part P of the Building Regulations and the need for registration, is answered by the ECA:
|
| No Part P registration of fitting cookers. |
|
Question: Do I need to be Part P registered? I work for a company that manufactures furniture and worktops for the healthcare sector. A situation arose whereby an electric cooker needed disconnecting, then re-installing so that a kitchen could be re-fitted in a bungalow. Do I need to be Part P registered. I work in the company doing electrical breakdowns on the production machinery, and I work to the 16th Edition.
Answer: If you are just connecting equipment to an existing circuit with no alteration to the fixed wiring, you do not need to be Part P registered.
And Voltimum UK managing editor James Hunt says: The 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations is being published today, so this user's reference to the 16th Edition needs to be seen in that light, even though the answer to his question will not change, it is thought. Note that full implementation will be on July 1st. Over the next six-months, the 16th Edition will be phased out and 17th Edition will be implemented. Within this period, installations can comply with either. After 2nd July 2008, installations should comply only with the 17th Edition. For longer-term projects with overlap, the client concerned must be made aware of the situation.
