Sustainability Site Goes Live

2007-12-12

A new website dedicated to helping mechanical and electrical contractors take advantage of the business opportunities created by the rising demand for sustainable buildings is now live.

Provided by M&E Sustainability, the site at www.mech-elec.org.uk features detailed design guides, updates on relevant legislation, technology guidance, case studies and news items.

M&E Sustainability is a joint venture between the sector's leading trade bodies: The Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) and the Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association (HVCA). It is spearheading the industry's campaign to develop rigorous professional standards for installation of renewable energy systems; create a skilled and competent workforce to deliver sustainable designs; and support specialist training providers.

"The sustainable building landscape is changing rapidly and is being tracked by the website's editorial team, who have the task of ensuring members are kept up-to-date with this dynamic market," explained M&E Sustainability chairman David Frise.

Experts from within the two organisations are also available via the website to answer specific technical and regulatory questions from M&E contractors.

"Sustainability is the issue that M&E contractors have been waiting for to move them further up the supply chain," added HVCA President John Miller. "It could be the lever that wins contractors a place in the professional design team. However, once we are there we have to be able to deliver and that means investing in our skills and technical know-how. M&E Sustainability, via its website along with a range of initiatives, is playing a crucial role."

ECA President Bob Hall was equally enthusiastic about the joint initiative. He welcomed the fact that M&E Sustainability was concentrating on the practical engineering aspects that would turn the country's sustainable aspirations into reality.

"Sustainability is, arguably, the greatest business opportunity our sector has ever experienced and clients are increasingly looking to us for answers," he said. "Mechanical and electrical contractors must work more closely together than ever to deliver the engineering solutions needed to create a more sustainable built environment.

"I am, therefore, delighted that the alliance between the ECA and the HVCA is already bearing fruit and I welcome this website as a vital new resource."
